古代的日本並無文字，當時主要用漢文，故至今仍保留了不少 漢字 ，對中國人來說相當方便，即使不懂讀音，也大概知道是甚麼意思。但別開心得太早，隨著時間演變，加上自身文化影響，這些 漢字 不一定與中文解法一致，有些甚至令人摸不著頭腦。我們先看看與食有關的 漢字 ，以後去日本旅行，一看即懂！

01| 味自慢 (あじじまんajijiman)
日本的餐廳門外，經常有橫額或易拉架，寫上「味自慢」，意思是「為味道而驕傲」，帶點自吹自擂的味道。
02| 注文 (ちゅうもんchuumon)
「注文」與「註釋」或「文章」並無關係，其實是「落單」的意思。
03| 湯 (ゆyu)
「湯」在日文中解釋為「熱水」，也可以解作「溫泉」，並不是我們飲的湯，飲的湯在日文中是「スープsu-pu」(soup的拼音)或「吸物すいものsuimono」。
04| 人參 (にんじんninjin)/ 大根 (だいこんdaikon)
在餐牌中看到「人參」別大驚小怪，其實只是紅蘿蔔，真正的人參是「朝鮮人參」。另外，一般白色的蘿蔔是「大根」。
05| 藥味 (やくみyakumi)
「藥味」除了解釋為「中藥材」之外，也指香味濃烈的食材，包括葱、洋葱、檸檬、辣椒及蒜等。
06| 唐揚 (からあげkaraage)
「唐揚」通常是指炸的肉類，多數是炸雞肉，有兩種煮法，一種是不蘸任何調味料，另一種是蘸上片栗粉再炸。
07| 献立 (こんだてkondate)
在較高級的日本料理店，例如吃懷石料理，會有一張紙寫上每道菜式，最前面寫著「献立」，意思是上菜的次序。
08| 定番 (ていばんteiban)
走進日本餐廳，有時在牆上看到「定番の料理」這個標題，「定番」是指一定要做或不能錯過的事，所以「定番の料理」是指一定要吃的食物。
09| 替玉 (かえだまkaedama)
在日本吃拉麵，麵的份量不夠的話，可以多叫一個麵，日文叫做「替玉」。
10| 精進料理 (しょうじんりょうりshoujinryouri)
在街上看到「精進料理」的牌子，不要以為是甚麼特別料理，而滿心期待的入內，其實是「素食」，即是「齋」，絕對不適合無肉不歡的人。
11| 並 (なみnami)/ 大(だいdai)
在日本餐廳，經常看到「並」、「大」這些字，「大」通常比「並」貴，因為這是指份量，即「大盛oomori」及「並盛namimori」，分別指「加底」及「例牌」。
